Jolanda di Savoia

Province: Ferrara · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,003 · Postal code: 44037

The lowest point in Italy is here: at Corte delle Magoghe, in the frazione of Contane, the ground goes down to three metres and forty-four centimetres below sea level, and the comune as a whole lies on average one metre above it. Until the nineteenth century all this was water and marsh, administered from Copparo.

The village came after the drainage, begun in 1882 by the Bonifiche Ferraresi company: in 1903 it was founded under the name of Le Venezie. In 1911 princess Jolanda, the eldest child of Vittorio Emanuele III, came to visit, and the village took her name. The church of San Giuseppe was built between 1904 and 1914.
