Saint Hellerus of Galeata and the ancient abbey
📅 Every year, on 15 May
Galeata celebrates Saint Hellerus on 15 May, in the abbey that bears his name.
On the plateau north of the village stood Mevanìola, an Umbrian town and later a Roman municipium, with its forum, its baths and a theatre of Greek taste. Monsignor Domenico Mambrini recognised it in 1934, by finding the floor mosaics; when the town was abandoned, its stones went into building lower down, where Galeata later grew.
The abbey of Sant'Ellero, founded by tradition around 490, was a diocese nullius: it ruled the territory with its own parishes and castles, and the story even tells of a meeting between the saint and Theodoric. The pope suppressed it in 1785 at the grand duke's request. Galeata stayed in the province of Florence until 1923.
