Feast of Saint Cassian of Imola
📅 Every year, on 13 August
On 13 August Rocca San Casciano, a municipality of 2,000 inhabitants in the province of Forlì-Cesena, celebrates its patron Saint Cassian of Imola (san Cassiano di Imola).
Until 1923 Rocca San Casciano was in Tuscany, in the province of Florence, and was moreover the head town of a whole district: it was Mussolini who moved it, with the villages around, into the province of Forlì. Of the fortress that gives it its name only ruins remain, the Castellaccio, brought down by the earthquake of 22 March 1661.
In April two quarters, the Borgo di Sopra and the Mercato, raise on the two banks of the Montone two stacks of broom and pine needles, one round and one conical, and set light to them together, while the bells ring. Bonfires on the river are documented from the thirteenth century, and then they served against floods; only from the eighteenth are they tied to the feast of Saint Joseph. On the Borgo's banner there is a ram and the words «Fat en là».
