Premilcuore

Province: Forlì-Cesena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 803 · Postal code: 47010

Premilcuore stands in the upper valley of the Rabbi, inside the Foreste Casentinesi national park, on the old road that led into Tuscany. In 1371 a visiting cardinal described it thus: a castle on a rock, with its fortress and a very strong tower, twenty-five hearths and a castellan stationed there on the Church's behalf.

In 1499 Caterina Sforza seized it as she prepared to hold out against Cesare Borgia, but the castellan betrayed her and the place went back to Florence for good. Little is left of the fortress of the Guidi counts, chiefly because of the earthquake of 1661. Until 1923 Premilcuore was in the province of Florence: only then did it pass to that of Forlì, changing region without moving an inch.
