Feast of Saint James
📅 Every year, on 25 July
On 25 July Portico e San Benedetto, a municipality of 769 inhabitants in the province of Forlì-Cesena, celebrates its patron Saint James (San Giacomo).
Portico di Romagna is built on three superimposed levels, distinct but linked by passageways, and they can still be seen: at the top the castle, the pieve and the podestà's palace; in the middle the arcades and the nobles' palaces; at the bottom, along the river, the commoners' houses carved into the walls. At the four ends of the borough stood as many watchtowers, which in time became tool sheds or swallow lofts. From 1386 the village passed to Florence and became the capital of the Tuscan Romagna.
The municipality was born of the union, in 1775, of Portico and San Benedetto in Alpe, which had grown around a Benedictine abbey of the year one thousand. Above San Benedetto is the Acquacheta waterfall, which Dante names in the sixteenth canto of the Inferno. And at Portico, over the Montone, the Ponte della Maestà still keeps its fourteenth-century paving.
