Roncofreddo

Province: Forlì-Cesena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,395 · Postal code: 47020

Among its hamlets is Montecodruzzo, which stands so far from everything that at Cesena, of a man who lives at the back of beyond, they say he lives at Montecodruzzo. Its church was built in 1572 by Giacomo Malatesta as a thanksgiving for a victory over the Turks; he had taken Roncofreddo by force in 1558, and ten years later had it granted to him in fief.

Beside that church stands an obelisk raised after the liberation, in October 1944, and it remembers German soldiers: it was they who warned the parish priest to get the village out before it was shelled, and it was the priest who had the plaque made. In the village there is also a museum about the passing of the front.
