Sogliano al Rubicone

Province: Forlì-Cesena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,251 · Postal code: 47030

The Malatesta of Rimini held Sogliano longer than any other place of theirs: until 1640, when it passed to the Papal State. Their castle stood at the highest point of the town, and in the nineteenth century it was the town council that voted to pull it down: what was needed there was a large square, because Sogliano held an important farmers' market.

From the eighteenth century to the nineteen-forties lignite was dug in three mines, at Capannaccio, Montegelli and Montetiffi. Then the plain took the people away: between 1950 and 1990 the inhabitants went from about eight thousand six hundred to little more than two thousand eight hundred. What brought some of them back was the formaggio di fossa, which here has never stopped ripening since Malatesta times.
