Igea was born of a dream that failed: in the early twentieth century the Rimini doctor Vittorio Belli imagined an academy here, where artists could come to write and paint, and named the streets after Tibullus, Juvenal, Martial, Terence. Nobody helped him, the project stalled, but the name he had chosen — Igea, the goddess of health — stayed.
Bellaria, instead, appears as early as 1359, as a fortified farm at the mouth of the Uso; in 1382 Louis of Anjou burned everything outside the walls because the Malatesta had given him no supplies. The Saracen tower, raised by the fishermen in the seventeenth century against the Barbary corsairs, now keeps shells and paper money. The comune dates from 1956; there are 18,591 residents.
