Pavullo nel Frignano celebrates Saint Bartholomew on 24 August.
The castle of Montecuccolo, above the town, was the birthplace of Raimondo Montecuccoli, the general who beat the Ottomans at Saint Gotthard and to whom is credited the line about the three things war requires: money, money and more money.
The name, instead, comes from paule, marsh: a patch of it can still be seen at the edge of the built-up area. In 1832 duke Francesco IV made Pavullo the capital of the Frignano and built himself a palace with an English park, where an enormous cedar of Lebanon grows that people here call the Pinone. There are 17,198 residents; Luca Toni comes from here too.
