Lama Mocogno

Province: Modena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 2,844 · Postal code: 41023

The village is named after a puddle: lama, in these parts, means a marshy place, and the pond that gave it the name lay where the sports ground was later made. It was drained in 1904. The old core, though, was called Mocogno, and it is painted in a sixteenth-century fresco in the castle of Spezzano.

Antonio Lorenzini worked in the town's registry office. After the eighth of September 1943 he forged the papers of the Colorni family, Jews who were on holiday at La Santona, and put them in a position to reach Rome and stay there until the Liberation. In 2001 Yad Vashem declared him Righteous Among the Nations.
