Saint Nicholas and Monte Cimone
📅 Every year, on 6 December
Sestola celebrates Saint Nicholas on 6 December, in the shadow of Monte Cimone, which at 2,165 metres dominates the entire Sestola area.
At the end of the seventeen hundreds the via Giardini was opened, and Sestola found itself off the roads that counted. The fortress, which no longer had anything to defend, was turned into a penitentiary, and the prisoners stayed in it until 1866; then a meteorological observatory and a summer institute for sick children were put inside it.
The castle appears for the first time in the diploma by which, in 753, the Lombard king Aistulf gave it to the abbey of Nonantola. Above the village, which at one thousand and twenty metres is the second highest comune seat in Emilia-Romagna, stands Monte Cimone: on the summit there are an air force weather station and a CNR observatory.
