In 718 the bishop of Rennes, Moderannus, was going to Rome carrying relics of Saint Remigius bought at Reims. At the Cisa pass he hung them on a tree while he rested, and setting off again he forgot them; when he came back the branch had grown too high, and it bent down only when he promised to leave the relics here. The following year the Lombard king Liutprand founded a monastery on the spot.

Two and a half centuries later the archbishop of Canterbury Sigeric travelled the same road the other way, and in his list of stages he wrote Berceto down as the thirty-third: Sce Moderanne, that is, under the Breton bishop's name. The cathedral dedicated to him is Romanesque, of the twelfth century; in one chapel a glass chalice older than the year one thousand is kept.
