Feast of San Giuseppe
📅 Every year, on 1 May
On 1 May Valmozzola, a municipality of 567 inhabitants in the province of Parma, celebrates its patron San Giuseppe.
In 981 the emperor Otto II granted the Pallavicino the rocca of Gusaliggio and the whole Val di Mozzola: the fortress stands on a crag falling sheer to the stream. In 1428 the condottiero Niccolò Piccinino took the castle of Pellegrino and arrested the Pallavicino marquis, who under torture confessed to having plotted against the duke of Milan: he was sentenced to death, and ten years later the fief went to Piccinino himself.
Of the fortress only ruins remain, and the reason is simple: whoever bought it took it apart to build, a little further on, the family palace. That palace later became the town hall of Valmozzola, until at the beginning of the twentieth century the offices moved to Mormorola, where they still are. It is a scattered comune, the least populous in the province of Parma.
