Between 990 and 994 the archbishop of Canterbury, Sigeric, crossed the Po here, between Soprarivo and Corte Sant'Andrea, on his way to Rome to be consecrated: that journey, written down, became the via Francigena. Earlier still, at the same point, the Romans had the mansio Ad Padum and a river port.

A document of 804 says that two scabini and a priest lived in the village, and that the priest's lands reached as far as Campione, on the lake of Lugano. In 1158, at Cotrebbia, the second diet of Roncaglia was held, the one in which Barbarossa took the regalia away from the comuni. And from 1181 the boats that moored or passed on their way to Venice or Pavia had to pay a toll.
