Gazzola

Province: Piacenza · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 1,999 · Postal code: 29010

On the coat of arms there is a magpie, for the name, perched on a well: that well stood in the castle courtyard and the farmers would go and listen to it, because inside you could hear the wind or the rain a day before they arrived, and from that they decided when to go into the fields.

In April 1945, at the castle of Monticello, some thirty partisans shut themselves inside and were attacked by four hundred men of the black brigades and the Italian SS: the partisans won, helped by reinforcements, and in the fighting Lino Vescovi, whom they called the Valiant, was killed. The village, once a hamlet of Rivalta Trebbia, became the seat of the comune in 1870, but the comune took the name of Gazzola only in 1889.
