Piozzano

Province: Piacenza · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 642 · Postal code: 29010

The arms of Piozzano show a tree laden with apples on top of a hill, and they are the memory of another village: the municipality was born as Pomaro, the apple orchard, with its seat up there; then the seat moved to Montecanino, and in 1875 a royal decree brought it down to Piozzano, on the valley floor. Two years later the municipality's name changed accordingly. The apple tree on the arms is all that is left of the earlier chief town.

The Luretta valley is full of castles, and almost all of them were pulled down at least once: in 1164 the troops of Frederick Barbarossa razed Monteventano and Montecanino, and in 1636 Spanish soldiers destroyed the castle of Piozzano, so that another was built not far off and called Casanova, the new house. In 1518 the feudal lord Antonio Alberto Arcelli was executed at Piacenza: he had been minting false coin.
