Feast of Saint Sebastian
📅 Every year, on 20 January
On 20 January Gemmano celebrates its patron Saint Sebastian; in the week of Ferragosto the town hosts the Sagra della pappardella al cinghiale, which has passed its fortieth edition.
Gemmano stands on the hills south of Rimini, above the Conca valley. It belonged to the archbishops of Ravenna until Galeotto Malatesta seized it in 1356; from then on it stayed with the Malatesta until 1504, when it passed to the Church. The sanctuary of the Madonna di Carbognano, the most important place of worship in the comune, stands where a temple of the god Pan once was: one of those overlays that show how old the devotion of a place can be.
In the territory open the caves of Onferno, the karst system that has made Gemmano known to those who go caving. But in the memory of the twentieth century the village's name is tied to something far harder: during the Second World War Gemmano was at the centre of a battle that levelled it, and what stands today was rebuilt. The two main feasts, by contrast, speak of the countryside: the fair of pappardelle with wild boar, now past its fortieth edition, and the feast of broad beans and cheese, held since 1982 on the first of May at the sanctuary.
