Feast of Saint Paul
📅 Every year, on 25 January
On 25 January Montefiore Conca celebrates its patron Saint Paul, to whom the town's church is dedicated; among the year's events are the Rocca di Luna Festival and the Sagra della Castagna.
In 1863 the village was renamed Montefiorito, and it took until 1917 for it to be called Montefiore again: fifty-four years with a name nobody had asked for, removed at the suggestion of a priest, don Paolo Palmerini. Some derive the name from a Jewish family called Montefiore, but it probably went the other way round.
In 1371, when the papal legate counted houses and families in Romagna and the Marche, Montefiore was found to have one hundred and sixty hearths. The Malatesta fortress is of the mid-fourteenth century, but the excavations say something was already up there in the eleventh. Galeotto was born in it, and for that they called him Belfiore: he died at twenty-three, in an epidemic.
