Tavoleto

Province: Pesaro and Urbino · Region: Marche · Population: 894 · Postal code: 61020

Tavoleto lies in the Montefeltro, and for two centuries it was a prize: fortified by the Malatesta, it was fought over relentlessly with the Montefeltro, until it stayed with the latter. Federico of Urbino, once he finally owned the castle, did not want to keep it as it was: he had it pulled down in 1458 and rebuilt to his own taste by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, who finished the work before 1474. The village then passed to the Papal States.

On 31 March 1797 the people rose against the French army, and the reprisal was total: the village was razed to the ground and most of its inhabitants killed. The castle, sacked and burnt, stayed a ruin for more than a century: only in 1924 did the son of Count Ferdinando Petrangolini begin the work that gave it its present shape. The municipality also has an oddity on the map: the hamlets of Ripamassana and Valle Fuini are detached from the rest of its territory, wedged among other municipalities and next to another exclave.
