Feast of Saint Blaise
📅 Every year, on 3 February
On 3 February Maiolo celebrates its patron Saint Blaise; in June, with the Festa del Pane, the old stone ovens are lit again for a few days.
Above the village, on top of a crag, the sheer remains of the fortress still stand: that is where the first Maiolo was, and between 29 and 30 May 1700 an enormous landslide, fed by a downpour that lasted nearly two days, wiped out almost the whole fortified borough. It has long been said that a lightning strike destroyed it: there had indeed been one, but in 1647, and it had only blown up the powder magazine along with a stretch of wall.
Today's village lies lower down, scattered in hamlets along the valley. Some fifty stone ovens from the early nineteenth century survive across the municipality, forming a scattered museum of bread, and in June they are lit again for the festival. Until 2009 Maiolo was in the Marche: it moved to Emilia-Romagna with six other municipalities of the upper Valmarecchia, after a referendum.
