Talamello

Province: Rimini · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 1,060 · Postal code: 47867

Talamello stands on Monte Pincio, in the upper Marecchia valley, and was a Malatesta stronghold in the struggle against the Montefeltro; in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries the bishops of Montefeltro resided here, and from that time there survives the little chapel frescoed in 1437 by Antonio Alberti of Ferrara for bishop Giovanni Seclani. In 1490 a manufacture began in the village mills that would last almost five centuries: the making of gunpowder, which stopped only in the second half of the twentieth century.

Talamello is also one of the seven comuni of the upper Marecchia valley that changed region: it belonged to the Marche from Italian unification until 2009, when, after a referendum, it passed to Emilia-Romagna and the province of Rimini. The village theatre is named after Amintore Galli, the composer of the Workers' Hymn, born in 1845 — though where exactly he was born is still disputed: his baptismal record says Talamello, because the church at Perticara had no font, but his parents were registered as living in Perticara.
