Feast of San Michele Arcangelo
📅 Every year, on 29 September
On 29 September Montecopiolo, a municipality of 1,175 inhabitants in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, celebrates its patron San Michele Arcangelo.
A dynasty comes from this castle: in 1140 the Carpegna divided their property and one of them was given the castrum Montis Cupioli; from his descendants were born the counts of Montefeltro. In 1371 a papal legate described it thus: it stands on a very high rock, it has a very strong keep, a captain with twelve pays and sixty hearths.
In 1441 it was from here that the young Federico da Montefeltro wrote to the captains of San Marino to say that he had taken San Leo from the Malatesta. No hamlet is called Montecopiolo: the town hall is at Villagrande. Since 17 June 2021 the municipality is no longer in the Marche but in the province of Rimini, in Emilia-Romagna: the inhabitants had asked for it by referendum fourteen years earlier.
