Saint Agatha and the White Truffle Fair
📅 Every year, on 5 February
Sant'Agata Feltria celebrates Saint Agatha on 5 February. Since 1988, on the four Sundays of October, the Fiera Nazionale del Tartufo Bianco Pregiato is held.
In 1470 Federico da Montefeltro gave his daughter Gentile in marriage to Agostino Fregoso, son of the doge of Genoa, and settled on her the county of Sant'Agata as her dowry: their son became doge in turn, and the Fregoso held the village until the family died out. Angelo Mariani, after whom the theatre is named, also left here in 1854 to conduct the Carlo Felice.
Because of those ties, on 4 September 2007 Sant'Agata was recognised as an honorary comune of the province of Genoa. In 2009, after a referendum, it left the Marche together with six other municipalities of the upper Valmarecchia and passed to Emilia-Romagna. The fortress above the village carries the Fregoso name and the design of Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
