Saludecio

Province: Rimini · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,028 · Postal code: 47835

The village may bear the name of a saint who is in none of the books: a bull of 1144 names the pieve of San Laudicio, but no trace of this Laudicio is to be found in the Biblioteca Sanctorum, and he is thought to be Eleucadio, bishop of Ravenna, never canonised and proclaimed a saint by the faithful: perhaps it was the unofficial cult itself that let the name be twisted.

Saludecio was the Malatesta stronghold pushed furthest towards Urbino, and its two gates say where trouble was expected from: porta Marina looks to the sea, porta Montanara to the inland. In 1462 Federico da Montefeltro took it from Sigismondo Malatesta and handed it to the Papal State. At Cerreto, just outside, the carnival still has its old masks, the Pagliacci.
