Doberdò del Lago

Province: Gorizia · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,441 · Postal code: 34070

Lake Doberdò has no surface inflow: its water comes from below, from the underground outlets of nearby rivers, as happens in few other karst hollows. It lies inside a nature reserve, at the foot of the valley that runs from the Vipava to the sea, and the municipality — the only one of the former province of Gorizia entirely on the Karst — has something like two hundred caves under it.

In August 1916 the village's name entered the history books of half of Europe: the battle of Doberdò is remembered as the battle of the peoples, because on one side stood the Sardinians of the Sassari Brigade and on the other Hungarian, Transylvanian, Slovak and Slovene regiments. Slovene is spoken here: before the war it was the language of almost everyone, and the municipal schools still teach in Slovene alone.
