Sagrado

Province: Gorizia · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 2,236 · Postal code: 34078

The name is Slovene: za gradišče, «behind the fortress». The comune lies between the left bank of the Isonzo and the Carso, and reaches up to Monte San Michele, where in the First World War Italians and Austro-Hungarians slaughtered each other for months. Here Italian, Friulian and Slovene are all spoken and all protected, plus Bisiaco; in three hamlets the signs are bilingual.

The coat of arms is a summary of the place: the wavy band is the Isonzo, the five little crosses recall the old sagrado named in a document of the doge Leonardo Loredan, and the lily with two sceptres comes from the Della Torre, who held the fief from 1556 to 1847. On the road to Fogliano the boundary stone that marked the Austrian-Venetian frontier is still there. At Peteano, in 1972, the attack remembered as the Peteano massacre took place.
