Farra d'Isonzo

Province: Gorizia · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,752 · Postal code: 34072

The name is Lombard: fara, the stronghold granted to a family. At Mainizza the Romans had a posting station and a massive bridge over the Isonzo, the Pons Sontii: over that bridge came, to invade the empire, Goths, Ostrogoths, Lombards, Avars, Huns, Hungarians and Turks. The castle, which the emperor gave in 967 to the patriarch of Aquileia, was later taken and destroyed by the counts of Gorizia.

The palace that is now the town hall was begun in 1728 by the Strassoldo, after the government had razed their previous one to punish one of the family, an accomplice in notorious crimes. And a villa in the village, built for the owners of the mill, was within a few years the German command, then the residence of a British commander, then the seat of the American command.
