Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
📅 Every year, on 29 June
On 29 June San Pier d'Isonzo, a municipality of 2,019 inhabitants in the province of Gorizia, celebrates its patrons Saints Peter and Paul.
For centuries the Isonzo was crossed here, on the ferry of the counts Sbruglio of Cassegliano: in the eighteenth century it was the only link between Trieste and the Friulian plain, and by the river there still stands the shrine where the barges put in. In 1845 the bridge at Sagrado was built and the ferry was of no further use.
The name appears in 1247 as Sanctus Petrus ultra Isontium, Saint Peter beyond the Isonzo: the village as seen by those on the other bank. What is spoken here is Bisiaco: the dialect's name may come from the Latin bis aquae, between two waters, the Isonzo and the Timavo, or more likely from the Slovene bezjak, refugee. Colle Sant'Elia, almost all of it in this comune, was in 1923 the first monumental cemetery of the Great War's fallen, before the bodies were moved to Redipuglia.
