Feast of Saint Martin
📅 Every year, on 11 November
On 11 November Doberdò del Lago celebrates its patron Saint Martin; the municipal territory includes the Lago di Doberdò, a karst lake.
Gorizia writes its own name three times over: provincia di Gorizia in Italian, Goriška pokrajina in Slovene, provincie di Gurize in Friulian. Its life as an institution has been just as unsettled, abolished as a local authority in 2017 and brought back in 2020 as a regional decentralisation entity within the same borders. Its 25 municipalities cover under 470 square kilometres on the eastern edge of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a small space that still takes in nearly 48 kilometres of Adriatic coast, the plain of the Isonzo and the first hills.
Grado, out on the coast, draws more visitors than anywhere else here, the provincial capital included; Monfalcone, the second town by population, sits on the same gulf a little to the east. Inland the river names the villages it passes, Gradisca d'Isonzo and Romans d'Isonzo among them, and the hills begin around Cormons.
