On the eleventh of November 1917 the emperor Charles I of Austria, inspecting the front after Caporetto, was crossing the ford of the Torre by car on a concrete footbridge: a sudden flood swept him away. He caught hold of a branch and his brother-in-law and the drivers pulled him out; to give thanks he had a chapel built, which was restored in 2021.

The arms, drawn around 1860, put together the Roman tower of the cemetery, the eagle of Rome and the baolâr, the hackberry under which people used to meet; the bridge, the road and the rivers were added later. The name appears in 1258 as de Vilesso and may come from the Latin villa or from the Slavic vy lĕsŭ, «in the wood». In 1915, when the Italian troops came in, six villagers were killed by the soldiers: it is the tragedy of the fasinars.
