Feast of Santa Maria delle Grazie
📅 Every year, on 8 September
On 8 September Andreis, a municipality of 282 inhabitants in the province of Pordenone, celebrates its patroness Santa Maria delle Grazie.
The name probably comes from the caves: from the Latin antrum, or straight from the local Friulian àndres, «caves», because the territory is full of hollows in the rock, good shelters for shepherds and woodcutters. A local legend tells that in 450 Attila, having reached the Forcella La Croce, could not make out the village because it was wrapped in fog, and went on his way.
The first certain mention is of 996, in a document by which the emperor Otto III confirmed to the bishop of Concordia his rights over a number of villages, this among them. For centuries Andreis depended on the pieve of Barcis, and freed itself from it in 1651. In the arms are the three peaks that close the valley, two wavy bands for the Alba and Ledron torrents, and five stars: one for each of the municipality's five villages.
