Vajont

Province: Pordenone · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,715 · Postal code: 33080

Vajont is a new village: it was built for the people of Erto e Casso after the disaster of 1963, and nearly all its streets carry the names of the hamlets left behind up there. The town plan is by Giuseppe Samonà; the foundation stone was laid on the twenty-eighth of December 1966 and the first families arrived in July 1968.

Before becoming a comune, in 1971, the village was an administrative exclave of Erto e Casso, which lies forty-three kilometres away. Somebody even proposed joining the two pieces with a strip of land forty kilometres long and one metre wide: the idea was dropped at once. The council that decided met in a meadow, because the provisional town hall had been occupied by those who wanted to stay at Erto.

Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

📅 Every year, on 14 September

On 14 September Vajont celebrates the Exaltation of the Holy Cross; in 2014 the municipality named its library after writer Carlo Sgorlon, who told the story of the 1963 tragedy in his novel "L'ultima valle".
