Barcis

Province: Pordenone · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 261 · Postal code: 33080

In 1327 the bishop of Concordia came up here, presided over a trial about a brawl and established a free market to be held on the feast of San Daniele. The document that records it matters for another reason: it is the first time «Barcis» means a village and not the whole valley, a sign that the old centre of Cellis had been abandoned, apparently because of a landslide. At Ribe there is a little church the inhabitants built to protect themselves from animals, and from the wolf in particular.

The village has been destroyed by fire twice, in 1606 and in 1944. In 1953, within its territory, a pallasite was found: a meteorite, known today as the Barcis meteorite. The following year the dam on the Cellina created the lake one sees now, of an emerald green that hardly looks real.
