Fanna

Province: Pordenone · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,556 · Postal code: 33092

A document of 924 carries the signum Antonii de Fanas: it is the first time the name appears, and its origin remains uncertain — perhaps from the Latin fana, the sacred places, while the gens Fannia and the Bona Dea are explanations without foundation. Until the second half of the sixteenth century the village was one thing with Cavasso Nuovo: they were called Fanna di Sotto and Fanna di Sopra.

In 1976 the Friuli earthquake killed one person here. The western Friulian spoken in the village is among the best described on the right bank of the Tagliamento, and not by chance: Vittorio Cadel wrote it, as Pasolini did at Casarsa, and his pages made it possible to define the variety. Today Fanna presents itself as the village of the old apples, and its public signs are also in Friulian.
