Pravisdomini

Province: Pordenone · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 3,471 · Postal code: 33076

The name of Pravisdomini comes neither from a saint, nor a lord, nor a river: it comes from an administrative function. It derives from the Latin pratum vice domini, the meadow of the visdomino, that is the expression used for the holdings that a visdomino administered on behalf of the patriarch of Aquileia or the bishop of Concordia. The village, in short, is named after the land managed by a deputy: a name that describes a delegation of power. The rest of its ancient history is that of the whole area: worked flints of the Neolithic on the banks of the Sile at Panigai, fragments of Bronze Age pottery, and in Roman times a centuriated territory belonging to the countryside of Concordia. The first written records come after the year one thousand, but only from the fourteenth century do they become clear, because before that the history of Pravisdomini is bound to that of the fief of Frattina.

With neighbouring Azzano, on the other hand, accounts have been settled twice, almost six centuries apart. In 1434 Pravisdomini became a parish of its own, emancipating itself from the pieve of Azzano; and on 18 October 2015, when it was proposed to merge the comune with that of Azzano Decimo, the people answered no with more than eight votes out of ten. In between lie the Venetian conquest of 1420, which made the village a fief of the Michiel, and the Turkish invasion of 1477, which devastated it. To see, today, there are the fifteenth-century parish church of Sant'Antonio, with an altarpiece by Pomponio Amalteo, and above all the church of San Giuliano at Panigai, with fifteenth-century frescoes attributed to Pietro da San Vito or to Andrea Bellunello. The railway stop, on the other hand, is gone: the line was closed after the flood of 1966.
