In the fourth century Aquileia ranked among the empire's great cities; today it is a village of three thousand atop a deposit of history — UNESCO-listed since 1998. In the basilica, the fourth-century mosaic floor spreads over 700 square metres: the largest early-Christian mosaic in the West, with Jonah, the Good Shepherd and an entire marine bestiary.
Outside, the Roman river port, forum and warehouses surface among cypresses; the national archaeological museum lines up capital-grade glass, ambers and gems. A bicycle ride through the ruins, and the Grado lagoon is ten minutes away.
