Saint Vitalis, patron of Annone Veneto
📅 Every year, on 28 April
Annone Veneto celebrates Saint Vitalis on 28 April, in the old church dedicated to him.
The name is a measurement: Annone comes from «ad nonum lapidem», the ninth milestone of the Via Postumia, the road that the consul Spurius Postumius Albinus opened in 148 BC between Oderzo and Aquileia. Ad Nonum was a staging post where horses and mules were changed, and where military warehouses held grain and salted meat. When the Roman roads were left without maintenance and their bridges collapsed, the place declined with them: its fortune had been the road.
What put it back on its feet was a donation. On the third of May 762 two Lombard brothers, Erfo and Marco, sons of the duke of Friuli, gave all their goods, «the courts and the houses in annono», to the abbey of Santa Maria in Silvis at Sesto al Reghena: it was the Benedictines who drained the marshes and brought the fields back into cultivation. The village stayed Friulian for a long time, administratively as well, until 1818; and under Venice the woods of Loncon were closed to the axe, because the tall trunks belonged to the Arsenal.
