Vivaro

Province: Pordenone · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,399 · Postal code: 33099

The name comes from the Latin vivarium, the nursery: it appears as Vivar in 1123, and the same word lies behind Vivaro Romano, in Lazio. The land here is that of the magredi, dry meadows over the gravel of the upper plain, and it is the ploughing that gives something back every year: coins, urns, iron tools, pieces of wall.

Those finds, picked up by hand by the volunteers of a local archaeological group, have been kept since 1980 in the Antiquarium of Tesis, housed in the village's old dairy: it is the richest collection of Roman material in the Pordenone plain, and it spans from the Bronze Age to the early Middle Ages. The parish church of Basaldella holds two seventeenth-century altarpieces by Gasparo Narvesa, and the municipality has two Venetian villas of the eighteenth century.
