Comeglians

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 532 · Postal code: 33023

The name says where the people who founded it came from: in Friulian it is Comelians, the plural of comeliàn, meaning a native of the Comelico. The village lies in a hollow of the Val Degano, in Carnia, exactly where three valleys meet, and it lived off that position for centuries: here the timber of the whole area was gathered and sorted. After the last war that trade all but vanished, and with it the reason the village mattered.

The church of San Nicolò dates from the thirteenth century, has a bell gable and keeps medieval frescoes. The parish church of San Giorgio stands higher up instead, on a rocky spur looking over the middle valley, and inside it holds a Roman funerary altar of the first century: a pagan gravestone that ended up part of a church. From the hamlet of Tualis a road climbs Monte Crostis to nearly two thousand metres, and it has become a climb that cyclists come looking for.
