The name, they say, comes from the Latin ovis, sheep, welded to a Celtic expression meaning to bring back: the place where the flocks were brought back. Under the little medieval church of San Martino the excavations found a fourth-century basilica of some four hundred square metres, with an octagonal baptistery before it: it was built while the mountains were filling with people come up from the plain in search of safer ground.

The men of these valleys went out as cramârs, pedlars of spices and haberdashery in the lands of the Empire, and the weavers went to inner Istria: the money came home. Since the Church forbade lending at interest, loans were dressed up as contracts on land, and so land counted for more and more: in Carnia it cost more than down in the plain, which is far more fertile.
