Feast of Saint Florian
📅 Every year, on 4 May
On 4 May Raveo, a municipality of 508 inhabitants in the province of Udine, celebrates its patron Saint Florian; in winter the village hosts Sapori di Carnia.
The name does not come from the turnip, as has also been written: it comes from the pre-Latin rava, meaning landslide, and one look at these slopes bears it out. On Monte Sorantri, above the village, excavations have brought to light a Celtic settlement, which in Roman times became a hill village closed by a stone rampart. In 1360 the plague made a slaughter here: seven people survived, and they shared out among themselves the seven local hay barns with the meadows around them; their names have come down to us, Ariis, Bearz, Floride, Iaconis, Pecol, Stiefin and Valino.
In the last war Raveo housed a Cossack garrison of about three hundred soldiers, in a village of seven hundred inhabitants; in November 1944 Cossacks and Germans clashed here with the partisans in one of the hardest battles Carnia remembers, and the partisans won it, fed by the herds of Antonio Zanella, whom everyone called the Ors di Pani. The earthquake of 1976 killed no one but changed the face of the village. Since 1986, on the second Sunday of December, the food fair is held inside the courtyards and the houses, and people eat the esse, biscuits shaped like an S.
