Corno di Rosazzo

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 3,269 · Postal code: 33040

The name of this comune is double, and the coat of arms draws all of it. Corno comes from the torrent that runs alongside, and a place called Cornium is recorded in a document of 1211 — in 2011 the village celebrated its eight hundred years. Rosazzo comes instead from the Latin rosa and denotes a place and its roses. On the communal shield, in fact, there are roses and a cornucopia: the two halves of the name, put into pictures. On the left bank of the torrent stands the sanctuary of the Madonna d'Aiuto, and there too water is involved: the current is said to have carried a small statue of the Madonna this far, and to preserve it the faithful built a church around it, in 1655. The devotion has not faded: the Perdòn lasts from 15 August to 8 September, more than three weeks.

Military history, on the other hand, is that of a castle nobody managed to keep. The castle of Gramogliano appears for the first time in a document of 1292; in 1353 the patriarch Nicholas of Luxembourg took it and had it pulled down. The counts of Gorizia decided to rebuild it in 1377 and only succeeded in 1424: forty-seven years of work, at the end of which the castle was immediately occupied by the Republic of Venice, which gave it in fief to the counts Zucco-Cuccagna. In 1431 the patriarch Ludwig of Teck put much of the eastern hills to fire and sword, Corno included, and in 1509, during the war of the League of Cambrai, village and castle were devastated by the army of Maximilian I of Habsburg. Quieter matters: in the little church of San Leonardo, at Gramogliano, there are two frescoes by Jacum Pitôr, a wandering painter from Nimis, the only example of Friulian naïve painting.
