Feast of the Holy Name of Mary
📅 Every year, on 12 September
On 12 September Capriva del Friuli celebrates the Holy Name of Mary; the village's parish church bears the same title.
The Roman name of the place is unknown and has left no trace: in the tenth century, after the Hungarian raids, the village was abandoned, and in the century after that Slav settlers refounded it and called it by a word meaning nettle. It is written Copris in 1202 and Coprewa some twenty years later.
Under Austria it was simply Capriva; in 1923, with the annexation, a royal decree made it Capriva di Cormons, and in 1954 Capriva del Friuli. It lies in the Collio among the vines, and for centuries it was a point of contact between Romance and Slav people. At the castle of Spessa, on the edge of the village, Giacomo Casanova stayed in 1773.
