Feast of Saint Leonard of Noblac
📅 Every year, on 6 November
On 6 November San Leonardo celebrates its patron and namesake Saint Leonard of Noblac; the town's name is already documented in 1257.
Until Napoleon the valleys of the Natisone governed themselves: the deans elected by the villages met in arengo, and the one of the Banca di Merso held its sittings in the shade of the lime trees, in front of the church of Sant'Antonio Abate. In the municipal coat of arms there are still the lime tree and the stone slab they sat around.
The town hall is not at San Leonardo but at Merso di Sopra, and the villages stretch along the Cosizza and the Erbezzo, set where the winter sun strikes longest. Below there are fifty-four caves and shafts: the longest is called Star Čedad, Old Cividale, because it was said that the town stood there and that a rush of water from the spring pushed it to where it is now. The name of the village is read from 1257.
