Precenicco

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,484 · Postal code: 33050

Few villages have changed hands in so varied a way. In the thirteenth century the counts of Gorizia gave Precenicco to the Teutonic Order, which held it for four hundred years; in 1623 the Jesuits took over; at the end of the eighteenth century the lordship was bought by Antonio Cassis Faraone, a merchant of Syrian origin whom Joseph II had made a count of the Holy Roman Empire.

In 1835 the estate passed to the Hierschel de Minerbi, a Trieste family, who had a residence built here to a design by Giuseppe Jappelli, the architect of the Pedrocchi in Padua. The village lies on the last stretch of the Stella, just before the river opens into the lagoon: the Foci dello Stella nature reserve begins here, and the parish church of San Martino is seventeenth-century.
