Talmassons

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 4,144 · Postal code: 33030

The coat of arms of Talmassons, granted in 1975, reads like a summary: there is a crozier, there is a black chevron on a silver field, and there is a bull. The crozier stands for the patriarch of Aquileia, to whom in 1174 pope Alexander III gave this place along with the other villages of the district of Codroipo, and who exercised here both spiritual and temporal power; the chevron is the arms of the Savorgnan, who held the village in fief after it passed to the county of Gorizia, together with the Della Torre; the bull speaks of cattle rearing, which for centuries was the economy of the place. Three figures, three masters: the Church, the family and the livestock.

After Venice, which fell in 1797, came the Austrians, and with them a bureaucratic definition that photographs the village better than many descriptions: in 1815 Talmassons was listed among the comuni of the district of Codroipo as a third-class comune, because it had fewer than three thousand inhabitants. In 1866 it passed to the Kingdom of Italy. The parish church of San Lorenzo was built between 1783 and 1784 and consecrated only in 1821; inside are the frescoes of Rocco Pittaco of Udine, from the middle of the nineteenth century. At Flambro stands villa Savorgnan, and not far off the biotope of the resurgences, with the Braida mill as its visitor centre: here the water does not come from a river, it comes up out of the ground. Finally there is a recent thing of which the village is rightly proud: in April 2024 the women's volleyball team of Talmassons rose to Serie A1, the first side from Friuli-Venezia Giulia to get there since the top division was established. For a comune of fewer than four thousand people, that is no small matter.
