Rivignano Teor

At Ariis, on the river Stella, there is a fortified palace: a fief of the patriarch of Aquileia from 1267, then sold to the count of Gorizia, and from 1336 belonging to the Savorgnan, who enlarged it. In 1413 it held out against the siege of Sigismund of Hungary, and the river that lapped its walls was the road. Here, at the beginning of the fifteen hundreds, lived Lucina Savorgnan, and here in 1511, during a party, she and Luigi Da Porto, a cavalry captain from Vicenza, promised each other eternal love: the two families were rivals. He was gravely wounded in the fighting at Manzano, she was given in marriage to a cousin. Then he wrote the «Historia novellamente ritrovata di due nobili amanti», and out of that story, passing from hand to hand, came Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Rivignano Teor was born on the first day of 2014 from the union of two comuni, and it was a merger that both of them wanted: at the referendum more than ninety-five per cent of the voters of Rivignano said yes, and seventy-three per cent of those of Teor. The river Stella, which rises from springs, crosses the whole territory and is the thing the place recognises itself in. Rivignano works leather and hides and makes ceramics and terracotta; its fair of the Saints runs from the last day of October to the second of November; and at Ariis, in the villa, since 2002 an art, theatre and dance festival has been held every summer. Teor is the home town of the footballer Fulvio Collovati, who played for Milan, Inter, Udinese, Roma and Genoa.
