Venzone

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 2,230 · Postal code: 33010

The walls were begun in 1258 by Glizoio di Mels: two rings one inside the other, a moat fed by the torrent, a hexagonal plan with unequal sides, walls eight metres high anchored to fifteen towers. The village appears for the first time in 923. In 1965 the state declared it a national monument.

Eleven years later, the earthquake of 1976 almost razed it. It has been rebuilt as it was, stone by stone, and has become the model of the Friuli reconstruction. The village has four names: Venzone in Italian, Vençon in Friulian, Pušja vas in Slovene and Peuscheldorf in German, and the last is a translation of the Slovene one, made around the year one thousand.
