Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Amaro celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas; the municipal territory preserves pre-Roman archaeological excavations.
On the coat of arms of Amaro there is a freshwater crayfish, and it is not a heraldic invention: in the waters of the Tagliamento, just below, crayfish were once so plentiful that the village was known for them. The houses stand at the foot of the Amariana, and there were people here as early as the first century: they probably looked after the pontoon bridges and the ferries on the roads that led towards the Danube valley. In Friulian the village is called Damâr.
The earthquake of 1976 badly damaged the buildings of Amaro, but not one of them collapsed: the village had already been strengthened after the tremor of 1928, and that work, done half a century earlier, held. Amaro is the gateway to Carnia, the place where the valley opens out, and that has made it an industrial area: the regional mountain agency and an international mountain research centre have their seat here, and Eurotech was founded here.
