Cavazzo Carnico

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,087 · Postal code: 33020

On 26 May 1928 an earthquake destroyed most of the village. They rebuilt it quickly but to anti-seismic standards, concrete in the load-bearing structures, iron ties and reinforcements: when the Friuli earthquake came on 6 May 1976, Cavazzo suffered fresh damage but not a single death.

In the Second World War Carnia was occupied by the Cossacks who had arrived with operation Ataman, and at Cavazzo there were more than two thousand of them: they renamed the village Krasnodar, after the city they came from. Lake Cavazzo, the largest natural lake in the region, lies lower than the Tagliamento and for half a century has not frozen in winter: the water is moved continually by the hydroelectric plant of Somplago.
